The Negemow Basket Shop
The word Negemow means “family” in Mi’kmaw, and I chose the name Negemow Roots to honour my grandparents, Angus B. and Mary K. Googoo, who owned and operated the Negemow Basket Shop in our community.
Located on the Whycocomagh highway where tourists from all over would stop by to take pictures. The shop was full of handmade ash baskets in a variety of shapes and sizes and other crafts such as dreamcatchers, chokers, beaded and leather jewellery, decorative mini drums, etc. made by my grandparents and their seven children. As business grew, so did the inventory, eventually buying from other local Mi’kmaw Artists across the province.
Carrying this name forward allows me to continue their legacy while creating something of my own.
