About The Artist

Jade Sark is a Mi'kmaw artist from We'koqma'q First Nation in Cape Breton, currently based in Kjipuktuk (Halifax). She is the founder of Negemow Roots, named in honour of her grandparents' former business, The Negemow Basket Shop. Through Negemow Roots, she creates and exhibits works that include traditional and contemporary baskets, paintings, and other handcrafted pieces.

A fourth-generation basket weaver, Sark was first taught by her mother, Cynthia Googoo, who guided her through making her very first basket at the age of 14. Since moving away from her home in We'koqma'q, she has been actively practicing basket weaving, a journey that has strengthened her connection to her roots. Her baskets are meticulously woven from black ash wood and often adorned with sweetgrass, birchbark, and intricate wood-burned designs, blending traditional Mi'kmaw techniques with her own artistic vision.

Through her practice, Sark seeks to honour her heritage, sustain her family's tradition of basket weaving, and ensure its continuation for future generations.
